About Our Calculator
Learn how we calculate your dog's age using veterinary science
How It Works
Our dog age calculator uses the latest scientific research from UC San Diego and AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) guidelines. Unlike the outdated "multiply by 7" myth, we account for the fact that dogs age at different rates depending on their size and breed.
The Science Behind the Calculation
In 2019, researchers at UC San Diego School of Medicine developed a new formula based on DNA methylation patterns that more accurately reflects how dogs age compared to humans. Their research showed that:
- Dogs age much faster in their first two years of life
- A 1-year-old dog is approximately equivalent to a 15-year-old human
- By age 2, dogs reach the equivalent of about 24 human years
- After age 2, the aging rate slows and varies by size
Size Matters
One of the most important factors in calculating dog age is size. Smaller breeds tend to live longer than larger breeds:
- Small dogs (0-20 lbs): Age ~4 years per calendar year after age 2
- Medium dogs (21-50 lbs): Age ~5 years per calendar year after age 2
- Large dogs (51-100 lbs): Age ~6 years per calendar year after age 2
- Giant dogs (100+ lbs): Age ~7 years per calendar year after age 2
Why the Old "×7" Rule is Wrong
The multiply-by-7 rule has been around since the 1950s, but it's scientifically inaccurate. It doesn't account for the rapid development in a dog's early years or the differences between breeds and sizes. A 1-year-old dog is not equivalent to a 7-year-old child – they're actually closer to a teenager!
